The history of Magdeburg as one of the great German centers of mechanical engineering began in 1838 with the founding of the first Magdeburg machine-building company, \"Magdeburger-Dampfschiffahrts-Compangnie,\" for the construction of steamships, steam engines, locomobiles, boilers, steam apparatus, and equipment for sugar production and distilleries.<\/p>

In the following decades, numerous other new valve manufacturing companies were established. One of the most successful was the company \"Sch\u00e4ffer & Co. Mechanische Werkstatt\" (later \"Sch\u00e4ffer & Budenberg\"). With their patent for the diaphragm pressure gauge, they began their triumph in Germany and Europe, all the way to America.<\/p>

Not least due to the concentration of engineering expertise and craftsmanship, Magdeburg had established itself as a leading center for German valve manufacturing. Magdeburg valves were in demand worldwide in the petrochemical and power-generating industries.<\/p>

After the end of World War II, the production facilities were largely destroyed. In order to regain old strength through combined efforts, the Magdeburg valve producers united in 1948 to form the \"Magdeburger Armaturen- und Messger\u00e4tefabrik\" (Magdeburg Valve and Measuring Instrument Factory).<\/p>

The \"Magdeburger Armaturen- und Messger\u00e4tefabrik\" was the starting point for Magdeburg's development into the central hub within the entire (meanwhile newly founded) GDR, both in the field of valve production and increasingly in the area of research and development. Finally, in 1970, the \"Magdeburg Armaturenwerke MAW\" (Magdeburg Valve Works MAW) was formed, establishing itself as the headquarters for the association of the 12 most important valve plants in the GDR and developing into Europe's largest valve producer.
