Project: Tapered Plug Valves

MIAM GmbH receives funding for the project "Apparatus and Method for Grinding Large Tapered Plug Valves" from the European Social Fund as part of the Saxony-Anhalt Knowledge and Technology Transfer Promotion program.

Within the scope of this WTT (Knowledge and Technology Transfer) project, a novel solution, based on the fundamental research of the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, is to be adapted to a large machine at MIAM.

This means that a completely new apparatus for conical grinding, featuring intelligent machine linkage with the control system of the MIAM boring mill, must be developed, built, and tested.

The extreme requirements result from the use of high-quality special materials, as deployed with high temperatures and explosive media in the petrochemical industry. The linearity of the contour and exact roundness must be guaranteed during finishing, and no crowning (Balligkeiten) is allowed to occur during the grinding of the plug's contour in order to achieve gas tightness of the metal-sealing surfaces.

This is highly innovative from a manufacturing technology perspective. The apparatus and method, when applied to large components, would be new. For MIAM, this would mean being able to represent the entire value chain within the company, react more flexibly to customer demands, and compete with the best manufacturers, who are typically large competitors.
